When is Mother's Day in Australia and how did it start?

Mother's Day began in 1908 as a new tradition in the United States initiated by Anna Jervis to honour the work of her mother, peace activist and women's rights advocate Ann Jervis. The Mother’s Day concept was first introduced in Australia as a way to celebrate and acknowledge mothers for their hard work and dedication. Mother's Day was originally celebrated in Australia in 1924 thanks in part to Sydney woman Janet Heydon. She was inspired to start collecting donations for lonely mothers at her local nursing home. Mrs Heyden placed advertisements in local newspapers asking schools, businesses, and individuals to donate lollies and soaps.
